Overnight Visitor Levy Consultation

England’s 16 Mayoral Strategic Authorities are set to gain powers to introduce an overnight visitor levy, aligning with cities like New York, Paris and Milan, and matching legislation in Scotland and Wales. The charge would cover most short‑term, commercially let accommodation, and British BIDs analysis shows it would affect 149 English BIDs—over half nationwide.

The government is consulting on the levy’s scope, exemptions, eligible accommodation, rate‑setting powers, administration, liability and equalities impacts, with the consultation closing on February 18th, 2026. British BIDs is engaging with BIDs and levy payers to shape its response and ensure the sector has a strong voice in how the new power is developed.

This round‑table webinar provided valuable insight into how the BID community wishes to be involved in the development and implementation of any local overnight stay levy.
